Why Do I Need Two Doses of the Covid-19 Vaccine? Dr. Norman Swan

What Are The Different Strains of Covid 19?
The prime and boost strategy ensures that the body is familiar with the vaccine and response needed to the virus (first dose) and is able to maximise it’s natural immune system to fight off and protect from the disease (second dose).

At the moment, you need two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. There’s one vaccine where you only need one dose, the Johnson and Johnson one, but it’s not available in Australia.

You need two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, because it’s called the “prime and boost strategy”. This strategy is similar to painting a wall that hasn’t had paint on it before. You first put on it a primer as the basis for the paint to hold. And the vaccine strategy is pretty much the same thing.

Your first dose is like the primer on the wall that creates the surface in your immune system for response and a bit of a response itself. And then you put on the final coat and that final coat really does give you the protection, this will be the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. This is why it is important for everyone to get two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

So the second one gives you a much deeper and stronger immune response that’s gonna stick.
