What Tests Will You Run? – Dr. Jenny Cook

Prior to the IVF process, I would do a very thorough fertility workup. This will involve blood tests. The critical ones here would be something called an AMH, an anti-Mullerian hormone, which is a marker of ovarian reserve.

I would do a thorough assessment of thyroid function to ensure that you’re immune to rubella and chicken pox and also all the antenatal testing. I would also organise a good-quality transvaginal ultrasound to look at your ovaries to again look for ovarian reserve, to look for any cysts or inside your uterus for any polyps or fibroids, anything that is known to have a negative impact on fertility and clearly, if there are any of those issues, I can talk to you about how any particular surgical procedures you may need to fix that.

There’s an additional procedure that I wouldn’t organise for everyone. It’s called a HyCoSy. And it is a measure of tubal patency, so letting me know that your tubes are open. For some women, that is also known to have a positive impact on fertility.
