Life expectancy for Australian men has risen from 75 years in 1995 to 80.4 years in 2016 (Australian Bureau of Statistics).
Smoking and risky drinking rates have dropped, while overweight and obesity rates are climbing. Yet there’s still evidence to suggest that men are more reluctant to go to the doctor & are less likely to be honest once they get there.
Men believe they need to be tough, strong and self-reliant and those who hold these beliefs have more barriers to seeking care – by either avoiding seeking treatment or failing to disclose the extent of their injury or illness.

Blood pressure: This only needs to be checked every two years if within normal ranges, but if high may need to be monitored more often.
Cholesterol: Get this tested every five years to monitor your risk of heart disease and stroke

Bowel Cancer – if you’re over 50 years you have an increased risk of bowel cancer. It’s a common cause of death but it’s preventable. If you’re between 50 and 74 yrs the National Screening program offers free tests every two years.
Mental health: 1 in 8 Australian men will experience depression in their lives. Don’t ignore the symptoms. Speak to your doctor and ask about the 10 Medicare subsidised psychologist visits.
Skin check: 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Protect yourself in the sun & have your skin checked if you notice any symptoms.
