What is Assisted Hatching? Dr. Katrina Rowan

Okay, so assisted hatching is a laboratory technique used within IVF cycles where the scientist will use, under a microscopic guidance, they will use a laser to make a hole in the shell or what’s called the zona of the embryo.

This has a couple of different uses. It may help the embryo hatch out of its shell, which is unnecessary if a patient is having genetic testing on the cells in that embryo. The other reason it’s sometimes used is to help the women who have struggled with implantation, with the theory that perhaps a hardened shell is what’s the barrier to implantation.

And so assisted hatching is thought to perhaps help the embryo hatch out of its shell to then go ahead and implant into the uterus.
