What Ascabiol is used for
Ascabiol is used for the treatment of scabies and body lice.
Your doctor or pharmacist may have recommended Ascabiol for another reason.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about why Ascabiol has been recommended for you.
Ascabiol is not addictive.
Before you use Ascabiol
Do not use Ascabiol if you have an allergy to Ascabiol or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin rash, itchiness, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, hands or feet.
Do not take/use Ascabiol after the expiry date (EXP) printed on the pack. If you take this medicine after the expiry date has passed, it may not work, or not work as well.
Do not use Ascabiol if the bottle shows signs of tampering.
If you are not sure whether you should start using Ascabiol, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Before you use it
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies to:
- any other medicines
- any other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Your doctor or pharmacist will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using Ascabiol during pregnancy.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. Your doctor or pharmacist will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using Ascabiol during breastfeeding.
Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using any other medicines, including any that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.
Some medicines and Ascabiol may interfere with each other.
These medicines may be affected by Ascabiol, or may affect how well it works. You may need different amounts of your medicine, or you may need to take/use different medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist will advise you.
Your doctor and pharmacist may have more information on medicines to be careful with or avoid while using Ascabiol.
How to use it
Follow all directions given to you by your doctor and pharmacist carefully. These directions may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.
Ascabiol can be irritant. It is important that you perform a patch test prior to application.
Scabies
The patient is lightly scrubbed all over in a hot bath to open up the burrows and immediately after drying thoroughly, is painted over the entire body from the head down, with a painter’s brush, followed 24 hours later by another hot bath. One treatment should suffice if the application is thorough. A second treatment after 5 days is required if there are still live mites present.
Body Lice:
The affected region is coated with Ascabiol using a painter’s brush followed 24 hours later by a wash with soap and water. Treatment may be repeated after 7 days if there is evidence of living lice. In severe cases this may be repeated 2 or 3 times.
Ascabiol can be used in children when diluted in equal parts with water, or in babies over 2 months, when diluted with three parts water.
If you do not understand the instructions on the bottle, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.
Where to use it
Use the lotion on infected skin as directed.
Do not put it inside the mouth or any body cavities.
Be careful not to get it in your eyes. If this happens, rinse your eyes with clean water and tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Never swallow this medicine.
How to use it
Apply thoroughly with a paint brush as indicated.
Wash your hands after rubbing in Ascabiol, unless they are the area being treated.
When to use it and how long to use it
One application should be sufficient, however a second application may be repeated after 5 days should live mites still be present
If you use too much (overdose)
Immediately telephone your doctor or pharmacist or the Poisons Information Centre (telephone 13 11 26), or go to accident and emergency at your nearest hospital, if you think that you or anyone else may have swallowed or used too much Ascabiol. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.
While you are using Ascabiol
Things you must do
Tell any other doctors, dentists, and pharmacists who are treating you that you are using Ascabiol.
If you are about to be started on any new medicine, tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist that you are using Ascabiol.
Side effects
Ascabiol may occasionally cause skin sensitisation, i.e. skin irritation and a temporary burning sensation. It should be tested on a small area of skin for 10 minutes before general application. If excessive stinging occurs, it should be diluted with an equal quantity of water, then retested before using.
If you get any side effects, stop using Ascabiol and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any of the following and they worry you:
- rash
- itchiness
- burning sensation
Serious side effects are very rare.
Other side effects not listed above may occur in some patients.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice anything that is making you feel unwell.
Do not be alarmed by this list of possible side effects. You may not experience any of them.
After using Ascabiol
Storage
Keep your bottle in a cool dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C.
Do not store Ascabiol or any other medicine in the bathroom or near a sink. Heat and dampness can destroy some medicines.
Keep it where children cannot reach it. A locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half metres above the ground is a good place to store medicines.
