Eye drops and eye ointments are used to treat many eye problems, such as conjunctivitis. Because they go directly into the eye they can get to work fast. Watch this video of how to apply them correctly.

Eye drops

  • Wash your hands before and after
  • Tilt your head back & look up
  • Pull your lower eyelid down gently to form a pocket
  • GENTLY squeeze the bottle to release one drop into the eyelid pocket
  • Do not touch your eye with the dropper tip
  • Try not to blink straight away
  • Close your eye & press gently over the corner – to stop the drops draining through your tear duct
  • Only apply one drop at a time to your eye
  • Blot excess away with a tissue
  • Wait 10 minutes before applying other eye products.

Eye ointment

Applying eye ointment is very similar:

  • Wash your hands before and after
  • Tilt your head back & look up
  • Pull your lower eyelid down gently to form a pocket
  • Position the tube of ointment upside down above the eye
  • Squeeze required amount of ointment into your lower eyelid pocket
  • Do not touch the eye or anything else with the tube tip
  • Blink a few times to spread the ointment around the eye
  • Your vision may be blurry temporarily.
