Fresh facts: Pear

With a season starting in Autumn and running all the way to Summer, the pear is an excellent addition to your winter fruit selection.

Pears are full of antioxidants, and can also help lower cholesterol due to their high fibre content. They’re a great source of vitamins C & K and boron, which provides health benefits across the board, from your brain to your bones to your muscles.

Like most sweet fruit, pears go well in desserts, or when paired with cheeses. Try this pears with blue cheese and prosciutto as a classy starter at your next dinner party.

They’re as simple as tossing the wedged pears in with a bit of lemon juice, then layering them with rocket, a piece of cheese, and wrapping them up in a strip of prosciutto.

Recipe with pears

Ingredients:

  • 2 pears, each cut into 8 wedges
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup rocket
  • 85 grams blue cheese, cut into small pieces
  • 170 grams thinly slice prosciutto, cut in half lengthwise

Method:

  1. In a bowl, toss the pears and lemon juice.
  2. Layer a slice of pear, a rocket leaf, and a piece of cheese on a piece of prosciutto.
  3. Roll up.

Fun fact

Pears are often recommended for weaning babies because they’re easy on a baby’s digestive system thanks to their low acidity.
