Some herbal menopause products lack potency

15 February 2002

Most complementary products for menopausal women don't contain the level of isoflavones they claim to, Australian research shows.

Promensil (Novogen) and Phytolife (Blackmores) were the only two products out of 50 that contained levels of isoflavone phytoestrogens stated. Even then, levels in Phytolife varied (Medical Journal of Australia 2002;176:135-36).

The research was funded with a grant from the maker of Promensil but involved sending samples to the US for independent analysis.
