Calcium and exercise: the keys to bone health

3 August 2003

This year the National Healthy Bones Week campaign emphasises ‘acting now’ to keep your bones healthy for the future.

The week — 3-9 August 2003 — is a partnership between Osteoporosis Australia and the Australian Dairy Corporation (ADC).

Osteoporosis is the progressive thinning of bone that is most commonly seen with ageing, especially in women after the menopause. It leads to an increased risk of bone fractures, even after little or no impact. 1.9 million Australians have osteoporosis.

ADC dietitian Michele Pink highlighted the apparent anomaly between women spending time and money on their external appearance yet neglecting the health of their bones, with 67 per cent of Australian women falling short of the recommended daily calcium intake for maintaining healthy bones.

‘What we’re asking them to do is devote time to building beauty within; to focus on healthy bones in their daily routine … Simple changes now can make a world of difference in later life,’ she said.

To help avoid osteoporosis, a diet containing adequate calcium — 3 serves of dairy food (including low-fat options) every day — and regular weight-bearing exercise are needed.

A serve of dairy food can be 2 slices of cheese, a glass of milk, or a tub of yogurt; even a daily latte will contribute to your daily calcium intake.

Understanding the risks of osteoporosis and taking simple preventive measures is the central message of Healthy Bones Week this year.

‘We’ll be working with health professionals and community leaders around the country to ensure everyone knows the simple steps they can take to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis,’ said Ms Pink.
