According to a Newspoll survey conducted in 2002, only a quarter of Australians had all the necessary products to treat minor injuries in their first aid cabinets.
As part of its Home & Play Safety Day 2003, the Wound Foundation of Australia (WFA) has advised all Australian households to check that they have the following 8 essential items in their first aid cabinet:
The WFA has suggested that householders purchase any item that is missing from their cabinet during their next trip to a pharmacy.
Geoff Sussman, founder of the WFA, also recommended that Australians build their own first aid kits: ‘Ready-made first aid kits are expensive and often contain items that may never be used. It is far more sensible and cost-effective for households to build their own, specifically suited to the family's needs.’
In addition to the basic kit, the WFA has suggested that householders purchase additional products to suit their household needs. For example, a high-stretch bandage for applying compression after injury and an ice pack are useful for sport-loving households. Whereas sensitive skin products are a sensible dressing alternative for young children, the elderly and those with problem skin.
