Patients undergoing spinal manipulation should be warned about the risk of stroke or vascular (blood vessel) injury, US doctors say.
If neck pain worsens significantly after manipulation, immediate medical evaluation is necessary (Neurology 2003; 60: 1424-28).
The doctors drew these conclusions after finding that spinal manipulation was an independent risk factor for vertebral artery dissection (damage to the wall of the vertebral artery, which can sometimes lead to blockage of blood supply to areas of the brain).
