Fruit and lung function

Eating fresh fruit on a regular basis, at least once a day, has been shown to improve lung function in children. An international study of more than 2,500 children aged between 8 and 11 years showed that those who ate fresh fruit at least once a day had better lung function than those who didn't get any fresh fruit.

The benefits of this improved lung function are particularly obvious in children who have asthma. The reasons for this beneficial effect of fruit are not understood, but might explain the old proverb 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'.
