Dandruff treatments
There are several types of shampoos available from pharmacies to help treat the problem of dandruff.
Medicated shampoos
Shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or coal tar may help relieve the scaling and itching associated with dandruff, and slow the growth of skin. Your pharmacist should be able to advise you about which medicated shampoo to choose.
When using coal tar-based products it is important to use the accompanying rinse or conditioner as this helps remove the coal tar smell. You should also avoid strong sunlight, as your scalp may be more susceptible to sunburn. As products containing coal tar and selenium sulfide may stain, you should ensure that the shampoo is thoroughly rinsed away.
Antifungal shampoos
Ketoconazole shampoos and miconazole shampoos contain a broad-spectrum antifungal, which inhibits the growth of yeast and other fungal infections, providing relief for the scalp.
Keratolytic shampoos
Keratolytic agents such as salicylic acid loosen keratin in the outer skin cells. As the cells loosen they are discarded, exposing the new skin underneath. Keratolytic shampoos are available from pharmacies.
Corticosteroid lotion
If the scalp is also very itchy, your doctor may prescribe occasional applications of a topical corticosteroid, such as mometasone scalp lotion (brand name Elocon).
Supplements
The following supplements may also help control dandruff:
- flaxseed or evening primrose oil;
- multivitamins, including zinc; and
- betacarotene.
