Cold sores

Cold sores usually appear around the mouth. They are caused by a virus known as herpes simplex type I (HSV-1). They are common and can recur at any time. An outbreak generally lasts 5 to 10 days. Cold sores are very contagious.

The sores form as clusters of red blisters. They may be painful and itchy, producing tingling feelings. The blisters fill up with fluid during the infection, dry up into scabs and then disappear.

There is no cure, drug or vaccine to prevent the herpes virus.

Recurrence of cold sores may be caused by:

  • illness;
  • trauma;
  • stress;
  • colds;
  • fever; and
  • prolonged sun exposure.

Because cold sores are contagious, you should avoid sharing drinking glasses and eating utensils, kissing anyone, or other closer physical contact when an attack occurs.

Although there is no cure and the infection will soon heal itself, creams are available that shorten the attack, particularly if applied as soon as it is obvious one is about to happen.

It is important to try to reduce anxiety or stress during an outbreak and to wash your hands often to avoid further infection and spreading the virus.
