Slowing the progression of hallux valgus (bunion) may have a beneficial effect that stretches beyond relieving foot pain, Australian and UK researchers say.
(A bunion is a painful lump at the base of the big toe.)
In a 6-year follow-up survey of 3000 people in England, the researchers found that the 36 per cent with bunions not only reported foot pain but were also more likely to suffer from low back, hip, and knee pain (Arthritis Care Res 2011; 63: 396-404).
A significant residual impact of bunions on general health, vitality, social function and mental health was noted. This may be associated with the effect bunions have on gait and balance, as well as difficulties purchasing aesthetically pleasing shoes, the researchers said.
