Antihistamine no relief for nocturnal itching in dermatitis

16 August 2002

The sedating antihistamine chlorpheniramine doesn't seem to relieve night-time itching in children with atopic dermatitis, European researchers say.

Researchers from the UK and Poland found that itching was not reduced in children with atopic dermatitis randomly assigned to receive chlorpheniramine treatment compared with those assigned to placebo (Dermatology 2002; 205: 40-45).

Four-week follow-up showed that chlorpheniramine did not reduce the need for topical treatments.
