New accreditation programme for occupational therapy

2 April 2001

More than 2500 occupational therapists are accredited for day one of a national accreditation programme, with more applying to participate, according to OT AUSTRALIA, the national body of occupational therapists (OTs) in Australia.

While all Australian occupational therapists are eligible to apply, only those prepared to meet the programme’s high standards will be accepted as an ‘Accredited Occupational Therapist’ or an ‘AccOT’.

‘It’s the standard upon which the general public, Government, employers and health funds will be basing their selection of an occupational therapist,’ said Rebecca Allen, President of OT AUSTRALIA National.

Accredited occupational therapists will be required to maintain minimum standards in training, continuous professional education and development. Occupational therapists who are accredited agree to operate by high ethical standards, which are clearly outlined for them in a Code of Ethics booklet published by the national association.

Another feature of the programme is its system for processing and resolving any concerns about the standards of practice of Accredited Occupational Therapists.

Occupational therapists around the country are getting behind the programme, with many hundreds joining up for the inaugural cycle in April.

Occupational therapists are health professionals who enable people to overcome limitations they may experience in their daily occupations, personal care, work, education, or leisure occupations because of personal or environmental barriers. There are about 6000 occupational therapists in Australia.

So, how do you find an Accredited Occupational Therapist?

‘Look for the logo,’ says Rebecca Allen. ‘Only accredited occupational therapists will be licensed to use the special logo. It’s your key to ensuring a successful outcome whenever you need occupational therapy.’
