Falls

Falling over can be a distressing experience, especially for older people, among whom it is a common problem. One in 3 people over 70 experiences at least one fall every year. In this age group, falls can often cause serious injuries, such as broken bones, and recovery may take a long time. Fear of falling again can interfere with normal activities.

Research shows that 2 out of 3 falls occur in and around the home, women fall twice as often as men, and falls are the most common cause of older people having to go into hospital with an injury.

There are several common causes of falls.

  • Hazards around the home.
  • Unsafe footwear.
  • Problems with eyesight.
  • Poor balance.
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • The effects of medications.
  • Chronic health conditions, such as arthritis.

There are some simple actions that can reduce the risk of having a fall.

  • Reduce the number of things you might trip on.
  • Wear safe shoes.
  • Have your eyesight checked regularly.
  • Be as physically active as you can.
  • See your doctor regularly, to keep health problems and medication under control.
