Baked beans now count as 'vegetables'

26 April 2002

Australian cricketer Shane Warne had the right idea after all when tucking into baked beans on an Indian tour.

According to UK government health advisers, tinned baked beans now count as 'vegetables' in daily fruit and vegetable intake.

The British Dietetic Association wants people to know that frozen, dried, juiced and canned products, not just fresh, all count.

While the move may justify Warne's culinary habits, UK heart disease specialists told the BBC they were appalled at the official endorsement of products which are often high in fat, salt and sugar.
