TV time linked with depression in women
24 October 2011
TV addicts are more prone to depression, according to a US study of 50,000 women, of whom 6500 developed the condition.
Women who, in 1992, said they watched television for 21 hours or more per week had a 13 per cent increased risk of becoming depressed over the next 10 years compared to those who tuned in for less than one hour weekly (Am J Epidemiol 2011, online 7 Oct).
Those whose physical activity exceeded 90 minutes per day also had a 20 per cent reduced risk of depression, compared to those who were active for less than 10 minutes daily.
