Vasectomy does not increase risk of prostate cancer

28 June 2002

Men who have had a vasectomy are not at increased risk of prostate cancer, a New Zealand study has found.

After adjusting for geographical region, social class, religion and family history of prostate cancer, the researchers found no association between prostate cancer and vasectomy or with time since vasectomy (Journal of the American Medical Association 2002; 287: 3110-15).

A total of 1244 healthy men and 923 men aged 40-74 years who had been diagnosed with a new case of prostate cancer, were included in the study.
