Consumer Medicine Information

What is in this leaflet

This leaflet answers some common questions about SOLUVIT N. It does not contain all the available information. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. All medicines have risks and benefits. Your doctor has weighed the risks of you or your child given SOLUVIT N against any benefits they expect it will have for you or your child.

Please read this leaflet carefully before given SOLUVIT N. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, please ask the doctor or pharmacist. Keep this leaflet with the medicine. You may need to read it again.

What is Soluvit N used for and how does it work

SOLUVIT N is a sterile concentrate which provides the body with water-soluble multivitamins by the intravenous route. When the intake of nutrients or food into the mouth or directly into the gut is not possible, or it is not enough to supply the body’s needs, then intravenous nutrients or foods can be given. This is especially important for people whose bodies are under physical stress from illness or recent surgery. During illness or after surgery the body requires nutrition or food.

It is usually given together with fats, amino acids, glucose and trace elements to provide a complete intravenous diet.

Before you are given Soluvit N

SOLUVIT N should not be given if you or your child has an allergy to any of the ingredients listed above.

You should tell your doctor if the answer to any of the following questions is YES

  • liver or kidney disease?
  • Allergy to any other medicines?

If you have not told your doctors about any of the above, tell them before you or your child is given SOLUVIT N.

How is Soluvit N given

The dose of SOLUVIT N will be determined by the doctor or pharmacist. The doctor will supervise your or your child’s treatment with SOLUVIT N.

SOLUVIT N is usually mixed in the bag of amino acids, glucose and/or fats, fat-soluble vitamins and given as a continuous infusion into a central vein. An electronic pump may be used to control the speed of the infusion of drip.

Side Effects

Since SOLUVIT N has to be diluted with other nutrient solutions, it may cause unwanted effects in some people.

The unwanted effects of nutrient solutions are a rise in the body temperature (this occurs in less than 3% of people who use it). Shivering, chills and nausea and vomiting occur less often (in less than 1% of people who use it). Reports of other unwanted effects caused by SOLUVIT N are extremely rare.

Unwanted effects which have been reported to occur immediately or soon after a nutrient solution has been given include: allergic reactions (skin rash and hives); breathing difficulties (rapid breathing, shortness of breath); effects on blood pressure; abdominal pain; tiredness; headaches; flushing; slight pressure over the eyes and dizziness.

If you or your child have/has these or any other unwanted effects during treatment, tell his/her doctor.

If you are given too much (overdose)

This rarely happens as SOLUVIT N is administered under the care of a trained professional in a hospital or clinic setting.

Your doctor has information on how to recognise and treat an overdose. Ask your doctor if you have any concerns.

Otherwise, immediately telephone your doctor or contact the Poisons Information Centre in your country.

Storage

The expiry date of SOLUVIT N is on the label of the pack. SOLUVIT N should not be used if the expiry date has passed.

SOLUVIT N should be stored below 25°C, and not frozen. It should be protected from light.

The contents of each vial of SOLUVIT N should be dissolved first and then diluted for single infusion only. Any unused SOLUVIT N should be discarded.
