US experts are urging paediatricians to take a stand on the issue of explicit content in music lyrics and videos in light of evidence linking it to reckless and violent behaviour (Pediatrics 2009, online).
A policy statement issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended paediatricians become aware that popular music and videos may be associated with permissive sexual and reckless behaviour and alcohol use.
Evidence showed an association between negative emotional responses to music and risk-taking behaviours, with one study showing that heavy metal music listeners had an increased risk of suicide, the statement said.
Data showed 60 per cent of fourth to sixth graders (9 to 11 years of age) watched music videos ‘a lot’, with an analysis of music video content showing violence was portrayed in about 22 per cent of videos and alcohol use in around 27 per cent.
