People who experience diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting after visiting a petting zoo may have picked up a zoonotic infection and have been recommended to visit their doctor immediately.
A zoonosis is an infection that both humans and animals can get.
The South Australian Department of Human Services says those most at risk include pregnant women, children under the age of 5, and the elderly. Immunocompromised people, including those with diabetes, are also at risk, the department said in newly released infection control guidelines.
People with known allergies to zoo animals have also been warned to be cautious, and those with asthma have been reminded to take along their reliever medication.
