Parents not worried by children being overweight

14 June 2002

Most parents of overweight children are not concerned about their child's weight, Melbourne research shows.

These findings come from a study of 2863 primary school children published in the International Journal of Obesity (2002; 26: 717-24).

Research by the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne also shows that 42 per cent of parents are not worried if their children are obese. More than 80 per cent of the parents of overweight children were also unconcerned about their children's weight.

Whether or not the parents were overweight themselves had no bearing on their attitude.
