A new study has dispelled the popular belief that obese children become obese adults.
UK researchers used information collected on more than 400 people from birth until aged 50 years to establish whether being overweight in childhood increased the chance of being overweight as an adult.
They reported in the British Medical Journal (2001; 323:1280-4) that although overweight teenagers were more likely to become obese adults, most obese adults were not overweight as children.
In fact, they said those who were thinnest in childhood and later went on to become overweight adults, suffered the worst.
