Mouthguards essential protection in kids' sport

Mouthguards should be compulsory for all children participating in contact sports, according to the Australian Dental Association (ADA).

Parents, teachers and sporting coaches need to be made aware of the dangers of not adequately protecting children’s mouths where there is a risk of collision or contact during sports and activities.

The advice comes as part of Dental Awareness Month, a major healthcare initiative of the Australian Dental Association.

Chairman of the ADA’s oral health education committee, Dr Don Wilson said, ‘Dentists are seeing too many cases of dislodged or chipped teeth following sports-related accidents.
