Overweight angina patients can reduce their frequency of attacks by losing weight, according to UK researchers.
Conventional dietary intervention with a target weight loss of 0.5 kg a week can reduce pain frequency as well as atherosclerotic and thrombotic risk (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2002; 56: 1039-45).
The researchers gave individualised dietary advice to 49 overweight men and women with angina who lost an average 3.5 kg after 12 weeks.
During this time, the average number of angina attacks fell from 3.2 to 1.4 episodes a week, while total plasma cholesterol fell from 6.3 to 5.9 mmol/L.
There was also a significant fall in coagulation and fibrinolytic factors (factor VII activity and red cell aggregation).
