Stroke: does it 'just happen'?

No. Even though a stroke is often referred to by doctors as a cerebrovascular accident, the term is not an accurate one since stroke is rarely an ‘accident’.

Certainly symptoms of a stroke may appear suddenly, but underlying conditions (known as cerebrovascular disease) are usually present for years before the stroke occurs.
