Kangaroo heart valves offer hope for valve replacement

30 May 2003

Kangaroo heart valves could be used as replacement valves in human hearts within the next 4 years, Western Australian researchers say.

Surgery to replace malfunctioning heart valves with donated human valves, animal valves (e.g. pigs valves) or artifical vavles is a current treatment option for diseased or faulty heart valves.

Doctors from Fremantle Hospital found after trials in juvenile sheep hearts that kangaroo valves had a low calcification potential and remained functional even under maximum physiological stresses.

The doctors plan to submit their data to the Therapeutic Goods Administration for approval.
