Intensive speech therapy can help people with aphasia caused by a stroke improve communication skills, a review shows.
(Aphasia is a loss or decrease in ability to write or speak due to injury to the brain.)
People who had 8 to 9 hours of speech and language therapy a week for more than 11 weeks displayed significant improvement in communication skills, Canadian researchers said (Stroke 2003; 34: 987-93).
But patients who had only 2 hours of therapy a week showed no improvement, even if therapy was provided for 22 weeks.
