This year's Heart Week theme 'A heart for life' focuses on healthy living and taking care of your heart for the long-term.
Heart Week is organised each year by the National Heart Foundation — Australia's leading heart health charity — and aims to raise awareness of heart health as well as funds for lifesaving heart research and community education programmes.
The key elements of healthy living emphasised by the Heart Foundation are not smoking, healthy eating, being physically active, controlling blood pressure and losing excess weight.
The main fundraising activity during Heart Week is the Heart Day Appeal on Friday 2 May 2003. Everyone is asked to wear an item of red clothing and to donate money to support the Heart Foundation's work.
Cardiovascular disease — that is, heart attack, stroke and blood vessel disease — kills more Australians every year than any other cause, claiming one Australian life every 10 minutes.
