Ear problems: treatment

Removal of ear wax

Ear wax softeners such as Cerumol, Ear Clear for Ear Wax Removal and Waxsol, can help soften or loosen earwax. Once instilled, the patient should lie with the ear containing the solution uppermost for 5 to 10 minutes. However, prolonged use of these medicines may lead to hypersensitivity and irritation. If pain occurs when using these medicines, consult your doctor.

Swimmer’s ear

Products available for general sale include Aquaear and Ear Clear for Swimmer’s Ear. The key ingredient in these products, acetic acid, has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Otitis media

Auralgan Otic is a pharmacy medicine that can help relieve the symptoms of otitis media. Paracetamol can also be taken to help with the pain and will help the symptoms once the child has been to a doctor. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe an antibiotic for otitis media, but this is not routine.
