People who lose more than a kilo of weight a week have an increased risk of developing gallstones, according to Adelaide researchers.
When they studied the gall bladder activity of 14 patients who had gastric laparoscopic banding surgery, they found that after 6 weeks, gallstones only developed in 3 patients - all of whom lost more than 1.7 per cent of their bodyweight a week.
The remaining 11 patients lost an average 1.4 per cent of bodyweight each week.
The research will be presented at San Francisco's Digestive Diseases Week conference in May.
