Link between low birthweight and gestational diabetes

24 May 2002

Women who are most at risk of gestational diabetes in their first pregnancy were low-weight babies themselves, US researchers say.

The researchers found that women who weighed less than 2 kg at birth were more than 4 times as likely to have diabetes during their first pregnancy as women born at normal weight (Journal of the American Medical Association 2002; 287: 2534-41).

This finding conflicts with a smaller Australian study published in 1999 which found no association between birth weight and diabetes in pregnancy.
