Chaste berry, also known by its Latin nameVitex agnus castus, is available as a standardised herbal treatment for premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
The plant has been traditionally used for premenstrual syndrome, but systematic evaluation of its efficacy is relatively recent.
A prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, reported in the British Medical Journal (2001; 322: 134-37) found that the product was well tolerated and relieved symptoms of premenstrual syndrome — including irritability, headache and breast fullness — by at least 50 per cent in more than half the women taking the active preparation.
