Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the top cause of cancer death. It is the fourth most common cancer in women and ranked second most common cause of cancer death.
In 1998, there were 27,675 new cases of cancer in NSW. Of these 2724 people were diagnosed with lung cancer—1870 males and 854 females. Males were 2.6 times more likely to develop lung cancer than women, and 2.7 times more likely to die from it.
From 1988 to 1998, the rate of new cases of lung cancer fell by 14 per cent in males, but rose by 21 per cent in females. Male death rates fell by 24 per cent, but females death rates rose.
