Two major conferences to be held in Australia in March 2001 will showcase the latest developments from Australia and around the world in thoracic medicine and breast cancer research.
The 2001 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand is being held in Brisbane and delegates will be addressed by leading international and national experts in issues relating to:
Professor Gilman’s interest in cell communication has led to the establishment of a multi-million dollar project to study interactions between cells and to develop a ‘virtual cell’ that can be used to test new drugs.
Keynote speakers at the conference include Dr David Krizman from the National Cancer Institute in the United States, who will discuss his involvement with the Cancer Genome Anatomy Project. CGAP aims to develop publicly available databases and technologies that will help scientists define, for the first time, the molecules that are present in cancer cells and make them accessible to other scientists.
Dr Minoru Koi from Brunel University in England will discuss his work in the establishment of a human gene targeting system that can be used to analyse cancer genes and Professor Rob Sutherland from Australia’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research, will speak on his research, which includes the role of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone in the development and progression of breast cancer.
