Reinforced concreting, logging and cattle farming top a list of occupations carrying a raised risk of cancer of the mouth and throat.
Researchers examined the jobs of more than 1800 Europeans with these cancers, including cancer of the oral cavity, oesophagus (gullet) and larynx (voicebox), comparing them with a control group of healthy people without cancer (International Journal of Cancer 2011, online 13 Jun).
In men, there was a 58 per cent increased risk of these cancers for bricklayers and a 74 per cent increase for painters, while in roofers and dockers the risk of cancer doubled, and for road construction workers, concreters, loggers and cattle farmers it was increased threefold.
