Fortunately, the outbreaks of SARS and bird flu of the last few years have allowed health authorities to hone their pandemic preparedness plans and the world is in a better situation now to manage and ameliorate the widespread devastation that a true pandemic can cause.

This so-called "swine flu" - the new influenza A (H1N1) virus which originated in pigs that is currently causing so much worldwide concern has the potential to cause a pandemic. The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert to Phase 5, which is characterised by human-to-human transmission of the disease in at least 2 countries in a WHO region. Phase 6 would indicate a global pandemic was underway.
