Small baby girls reach normal growth by 20

13 July 2003

Baby girls with a birth weight of less than 1500 grams catch up height and weight by the time they turn 20, according to US researchers.

But boys with a birth weight of less than 1500 grams did not catch up over the same time frame (Pediatrics 2003; 112: e30-38).

At the age of 20 years, the men were on average 11 kg lighter and 3 cm shorter than their counterparts of normal birth weight.

The group studied consisted of about 200 babies born in the 1970s, at a mean weight of 1189 grams, and at a mean gestational age of 29.8 weeks.
