Pregnancy excess weight predisposes to obesity

9 August 2002

Women who gain too much weight during pregnancy and fail to shed weight 6 months after giving birth are prone to obesity later in life, US researchers have found.

Their study of 540 women found that women who gained more weight than recommended during pregnancy were at a much higher risk of obesity 10 years on (Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002; 100: 245-52).

The researchers also found that women who breastfed longer than 3 months had the smallest weight gain over their pre-pregnancy weight, compared to women who did not breastfeed or breastfed for 2 weeks or less.
