Breast feeding - national 24-hour advice helpline launched

3 April 2009

A national breast feeding advice line, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, has been officially launched.

The Commonwealth-funded 1800 MUM 2 MUM (1800 686 2 686) line was launched by Health Minister Nicola Roxon last week.

Operated by the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA), the line replaces 13 different numbers which previously operated in different states.

It commenced operation in early February, and has averaged 1200 calls per week, with mothers seeking advice on poor milk supply, breast refusal, expressing and weaning.

Breast feeding expert Dr Lisa Amir, from the University of Melbourne, said the service streamlined the delivery of essential information for mothers, and ensured a trained consultant was always readily contactable from anywhere in Australia.
