Asthma and being active
Regular physical activity is an important part of good asthma management, and it helps to improve your general health and well-being. If your asthma is actively controlled you should not be prevented or restricted from doing daily activities such as household chores, walking or exercise.
If your asthma symptoms occur during or after physical activity, this can indicate that your asthma is poorly controlled or that you have exercise-induced asthma. See your doctor for advice.
To manage your asthma better and to prevent asthma from interfering with your daily activities, the National Asthma Council recommends the following actions.
- Follow your personalised written ‘Asthma Action Plan’ which explains how to manage your asthma on a daily basis and what to do when your asthma gets worse. Your doctor will give you an Asthma Action Plan specifically for your needs.
- Take your asthma medicines as advised by your doctor, even when your asthma seems under control.
- Know your asthma triggers and avoid them where possible or ask your doctor how to manage them.
- See your doctor for regular check-ups even if your asthma seems well controlled. Take your inhalers and spacers with you so your doctor can review how you use them.
