Smokers get quit message

31 May 2002

The number of people who smoke each day has dropped slightly during the past 3 years, says a government report.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report says that now 19.5 per cent of people aged 14 years or more smoke daily compared with 21.8 per cent 3 years ago.

Illicit drug use, especially of marijuana, has also dropped. Amphetamine and ecstasy use remained steady.

The report, 2001 National Drug Strategy Household Survey: First Results, estimates that there are 7000 teenage heroin users in Australia and 14,500 users aged 20-29 years.
