One in 5 methadone users have injected it

25 April 2003

One in 5 methadone users have injected the drug, South Australian research shows.

People who injected methadone were more likely to be male, on higher doses of the drug, and on methadone maintenance, the researchers said (Addiction 2003; 98: 413-18).

The study conducted in 365 methadone users also showed that injectors were more dependent on heroin and more likely to engage in risky behaviour such as using heroin alone, polydrug use and not trialling new batches of heroin.
