Cannabis dependency risk worse in young males
Male high-school students are more than twice as likely as their female classmates to be dependent on cannabis by their early 20s, Australian research shows.
Researchers from Melbourne's Murdoch Children's Research Institute followed 1601 high-school students for 6 years.
They found that weekly cannabis use, persistent antisocial behaviour, and persistent cigarette smoking also increased the risk of cannabis dependence (British Journal of Psychiatry 2003; 182: 330-36).
However, a psychiatric condition did not predict dependence.
